I thought it was best to start off back in the beginning where hip hop and R'n'B began, with the likes of Biggie Smalls, Tupac Shakur, Common, Puff daddy, Lil Kim, 50 cent, Dr Dre, Ice Cube, Mos Def, Eminem Aliyah Ja-Rule, and rap artistsTwista ect. so here is an example of oldskool:
1994 Common - I used to love H.E.R
part of his 1994 albumn (year I was born) Resurrection.
Not the greatest quality video, but it was all about the music and what hip hop and rap meant during this era, there are street dancers and the lyrics and video relate to what was relevant in those times - the colour of your skin, love, music, friends, survial! this song is one of the greatest of the time and without it and its siblings the urban music scene would not be where it is today.
The best urban music video is all about a bit Old skool, Beyoncé and 2000, Destiny's child - Independent Women, One of the first videos I ever watched on the music channel, it was one of the songs used in Charlie's Angels Movie of that year. Hence the video's secret agent, dominant females in matching outfits, whilst clips from the Charlie's Angel film appear on the back screen. This song was Destiny's Child's big break as there song hit number one and was used in a film - synergy.
Eminem - Just Loose it 2004
First single from his fifth studio albumn Encore.
I like the fun and quirky video, which matches the random lyrics, with Eminem playing himself alongside playing Michael Jackson.
as it is about the girl he is in love with, the lyrics are easy to empathise with and the beat is easy and simple. Kano is a classic hip hop artist, his voice is so smoothe.
I like this style of video, where there is a story that is currently happening, Kano in the music studio spitting bars for his latest track, and then he walks out of the studio and onto the street revealling his softer side, as he goes to meet his girlfriend at work and starts rapping about his love/relationship with her. Its all very sweet.
Although this video is one of the early oldskool videos, you can see how a narrative framework has been used to tell the story, keeping it relevant and life like with a story behind the lyrics - the music studio is the present along with the story about the girl he's in a relationship with.
2011 Drake - Marvins Room, Jewish rapper Drake has been around for years now however it is over the past three years where his music has become further and further mainstream and more of a household name.
